Psychiatrist, psychologist and counsellor

• A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialised in mental health. They assess, diagnose and treat, and can prescribe medicines.
• A clinical psychologist has postgraduate training in psychology and provides assessment and psychological therapies, but does not prescribe.
• A counsellor provides talking support. Training and regulation vary widely between countries, so ask about qualifications and any professional body membership.
